What is a mortice lock?
A mortice lock sits inside a pocket cut into the edge of the door, which is where the name comes from. You’ll find them on wooden doors, and they come in two main types:
A mortice deadlock has a single bolt operated by a key. It’s often fitted alongside a nightlatch for extra security on a front door.
A mortice sashlock combines a deadbolt with a latch, so it can be opened with a handle as well as locked with a key. Common on back doors and side doors.
Mortice locks are also described by the number of levers inside them, usually 3-lever or 5-lever. The lever count matters for security, which is where the British Standard comes in.
British Standard mortice locks and your insurance
This is the part that catches a lot of people out, so it’s worth explaining clearly.
Most home insurers require a mortice deadlock that meets the British Standard BS3621 on wooden front and back doors. To meet that standard, the lock must have at least 5 levers, so a 3-lever lock won’t qualify. A genuine BS3621 lock carries the BSI Kitemark stamped on the faceplate along the edge of the door.
Here’s the thing many people don’t realise: a lock marked simply “5 lever” isn’t automatically British Standard. It needs the actual Kitemark to count. If your policy asks for a British Standard lock and yours doesn’t have it, a claim could be affected.
One more useful point. BS3621 applies to wooden doors only. If your door is uPVC or composite, you can’t fit a mortice lock to it, and your insurer will be looking for full multipoint locking mechanism with a eurocylinder lock.
Most insurers do not specify what type of eurocylinder but we recommend using at least a 1* rated cylinder but preferably a 3* cylinder with a TS007 or Sold Secure diamond rating – there is not a British Standard rating for cylinders as there is for mortice locks, yet. A weak cylinder is what burglars will attack first.

When you might need a mortice lock fitted
There are a few common reasons people call Geoff about mortice locks:
- Your insurer has asked for a British Standard lock and your current one doesn't meet it
- The existing lock is old, stiff, or the key is getting harder to turn
- You've lost the key and need the lock replaced
- You've moved into a property and want to be sure who has keys
- The door has no deadlock and you want to improve security
- You've had a break-in or attempted break-in and need the lock replaced
What to expect when Geoff visits
Geoff will look at your door and your existing lock first. If you’re replacing a lock, he’ll check whether a like-for-like swap will work or whether the door needs any adjustment to take a new lock. Wooden doors vary, and the pocket for the lock has to be right, so it’s worth having it done properly.
He’ll explain what’s needed, confirm the price, and in most cases carry out the work on the same visit. He carries British Standard mortice locks in common sizes in the van. Before he leaves, he’ll check the lock operates smoothly and that you’re happy with it, and he can provide a receipt confirming the lock meets BS3621 if you need it for your insurer.
How much does mortice lock fitting cost?
As a rough guide, a new mortice lock fitted starts from £100. The final price depends on the type of lock your door needs and whether any adjustment to the door is required. Geoff will always confirm the price with you before starting, and there’s no call-out fee.

Common questions about mortice locks
How do I know if my lock is British Standard?
Open the door and look at the metal faceplate on the edge of the door. A British Standard lock has the BSI Kitemark (a heart-shaped symbol) and “BS3621” stamped into it. If there’s no Kitemark, it probably doesn’t meet the standard. Geoff can check for you.
My insurer says I need a British Standard lock. Can you fit one?
Yes. Geoff fits BS3621 mortice deadlocks and can provide a receipt confirming the standard for your insurer. If your door is uPVC rather than wood, he’ll explain what you need instead.
What's the difference between a deadlock and a sashlock?
A deadlock has just a key-operated bolt. A sashlock has both a bolt and a latch so it works with a handle too. Geoff will advise which suits your door.
Can you replace my old mortice lock with a like-for-like one?
Usually, yes, and that’s often the quickest option. If the old lock is a non-standard size, the door may need slight adjustment, which Geoff will explain before starting.
How long does it take to fit a mortice lock?
A straightforward replacement on a timber door usually takes under an hour. If the door needs adjustment to take a new lock, it can take a little longer.

Lost keys to daughter’s flat while on cat duty whilst she was away and on a Sunday. Called Geoff who was super helpful, couldn’t come immediately as on another job but messaged us as soon as he was and met us on site. Very efficient super friendly. Highly recommend. Very grateful parents he saved us, cat pleased as well as being fed through cat flap not ideal !!

I left a request on Checkatrade early this morning and within half an hour Geoff had replied by WhatsApp to say he could call at 11.00am to do a free assessment. He arrived punctually and after a quick check said he could fix the door immediately at an agreed price. He did so and also adjusted another door that was troublesome for no extra cost. Geoff was polite, friendly and efficient. I would have no hesitation in recommending him as someone who provides an excellent service.

Called Geoff of Grn Locksmiths as we had shut our front door with keys in the other side. Nightmare with 2 kids outside. Geoff was amazing. Geoff came to my rescue when the deadlock accidentally came across and I couldn’t get into the house. He managed to get in really quickly and luckily there was no damage to repair which is something I’d been worried about. I can’t rate him highly enough - great communication and a top job!

My wife found Geoff, with the most positive reviews, we had at least three separate calls from other companies, Geoff arrived on time, and inspected carefully the task of replacing all the locks, at our home, he took many accurate measurements and suggested excellent and well respected locks. Went beyond good service to excellent. Clear communication and written invoices. Always polite and trustworthy. Highly recommended.

This is the second time I have used Geoff at Grn, he was brilliant the first time and just as brilliant second time round. Super quick to come out and have a look with no call out fee. My lock was assessed and changed within the hour. Highly recommend.

We called Geoff after our new house had issues with the front door locks (one key could only work one way, while one key didn’t work at all!) He was super responsive coming out in just over an hour, which was so appreciated especially as it was a Saturday. Geoff was so helpful, sorting the issue easily, his prices were great, and Geoff himself was really personable, friendly and helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to use him again if needed and would recommend to anyone!

After having locked myself out I called Geoff after seeing his reviews and pictures on Google. He was able to help and arrived quickly. He was obviously very capable and had the door open in no time. Very happy with the service. Also turned out cheaper than most others we googled.
