When you move into a new home, you have no idea how many keys are out there or who has them. Previous owners, family members, neighbours, cleaners, builders, letting agents, an old tenant. Even if the sellers hand over three sets, that doesn’t mean three sets is all there ever were.
Changing the locks is one of the simplest things you can do to make a new house properly yours. Geoff at GRN Locksmiths handles new home lock changes across Hampshire, usually in a single visit.
What the new home service includes
Geoff’s new home service covers changing all the locks at your new property, up to four, and servicing the existing mechanisms while he’s there. It starts from £350 with no call-out fee.
That typically means:
- New locks fitted to your front and back doors
- Any side door, garage door or outbuilding included within the four
- Existing door mechanisms checked, adjusted and lubricated
- All new keys handed over to you, with no other sets in circulation
- Advice on anything that isn't up to standard or could be improved
If you’ve got more than four doors, or you want windows looked at too, just say when you call and Geoff will price it properly before he starts.
Why bother changing the locks?
A few reasons people do this, and they’re all sensible.
You don’t know who has keys. This is the main one. Estate agents, previous tenants, tradespeople and family members may all have had a set at some point, and there’s no way to know how many were cut over the years.
Your insurer may expect it. Some policies require locks that meet British Standard on wooden doors, or anti-snap cylinders on uPVC. If the previous owner never upgraded, you may not be covered properly.
The existing locks may be old or worn. Doors that stick, keys that are stiff, and mechanisms that are starting to fail are all much easier to sort now than during a callout in six months.
Peace of mind. It’s a small cost against the price of moving, and it means the only keys to your home are the ones in your hand.
Timing it right
Most people book Geoff for the day of completion or the first few days afterwards. That’s usually the easiest, since the house is empty and there’s clear access.
If you’re moving in on the day and want it done immediately, mention that when you call. Geoff will do his best to fit around your move rather than the other way round. If you’re renovating first, it can be worth waiting until the builders have finished and handing over a set to them in the meantime.
What to expect when Geoff visits
Geoff will walk round the property with you first and look at every external door. Different doors need different things, so a wooden front door, a uPVC back door and a garage side door may each need a different type of lock.
He’ll explain what he recommends for each one, confirm the price, and get on with it. Most new home lock changes are done in a single visit. He carries a good range of locks and cylinders in the van, so it’s rare that anything needs ordering.
Before he leaves, he’ll test every lock, hand over all the keys, and talk you through anything worth knowing about your new doors.

Common questions about new home lock changes
How much does it cost?
The new home service starts from £350 and covers changing all locks up to four doors, plus servicing your existing mechanisms. Geoff will confirm the exact price before starting, and there’s no call-out fee.
How many doors does that cover?
Up to four. If you’ve got more, or you’d like windows included, mention it when you call and Geoff will price it properly.
Can you do it on the day I move in?
Usually, yes. Let Geoff know your completion date when you call and he’ll do his best to fit around it.
Do I need to change the locks if the sellers gave me all the keys?
It’s still worth it. You can’t know how many keys were cut over the years or who might still have one. Changing the locks is the only way to be certain.
Can you match all the doors to one key?
Often, yes. Having your doors keyed alike means one key opens everything, which is much easier day to day. Ask Geoff when he visits and he’ll tell you if it’s possible with your doors.

Unfortunately, initially, I had the misfortune to contact another similar sounding company called GR*D* Locksmiths, purely because their name came up first on a Google search. All I can say is AVOID GRD as, firstly, the guy could hardly speak English or understand what I needed (which is a simple thing) and, secondly, after being at my property for all of 15 mins and managing to make no sense whatsoever, he insisted on charging me a callout rate of £49 even though their website said ‘no callout fee’.

Arrived home late on a cold wet winter’s night to find that our front door lock was completely broken. We called Geoff and within minutes, he arrived and moments later we were safely within our home! The lock needed to be replaced as well as the barrel itself, which Geoff did with calm and maximum efficiency. Geoff arrrived on day 1 & helped us figure out our locks following relocation to the area. He replaced those necessary to ensure our security and insurance compliance. Being new to the area it was great to pick up some local recommendations. His courtesy and patience is much appreciated.

Called Geoff of Grn Locksmiths as we had shut our front door with keys in the other side. Nightmare with 2 kids outside. Geoff was amazing. He was with us in less than 15 minutes and got us in to the house and went on to fit a better mechanism. Professional service. So helpful and so quick. Thanks. Highly recommend.

Geoff came to my rescue when the deadlock accidentally came across and I couldn’t get into the house. He managed to get in really quickly and luckily there was no damage to repair which is something I’d been worried about. I can’t rate him highly enough - great communication and a top job!

My wife found Geoff, with the most positive reviews, we had at least three separate calls from other companies, Geoff arrived on time, and inspected carefully the task of replacing all the locks, at our home, he took many accurate measurements and suggested excellent and well respected locks. Went beyond good service to excellent. Clear communication and written invoices. Always polite and trustworthy. Highly recommended.

Snapped a key off in the lock, Geoff saved our bacon though by removing the broken end. Great service, really polite and friendly, and talked me through some other basic home security advice.

This is the second time I have used Geoff at Grn, he was brilliant the first time and just as brilliant second time round. Super quick to come out and have a look with no call out fee. My lock was assessed and changed within the hour. Highly recommend.

We called Geoff after our new house had issues with the front door locks (one key could only work one way, while one key didn’t work at all!) He was super responsive coming out in just over an hour, which was so appreciated especially as it was a Saturday. Geoff was so helpful, sorting the issue easily, his prices were great, and Geoff himself was really personable, friendly and helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to use him again if needed and would recommend to anyone!

After having locked myself out I called Geoff after seeing his reviews and pictures on Google. He was able to help and arrived quickly. He was obviously very capable and had the door open in no time. Very happy with the service. Also turned out cheaper than most others we googled.
