uPVC doors are on most homes these days, and when the lock starts playing up it can be both frustrating and worrying. Maybe the handle has gone stiff, the key won’t turn, or the door won’t lock at all. Common uPVC door lock problems
uPVC doors use a multipoint locking system, the mechanism that fires several bolts and/or hooks/rollers into the frame keeps when you lift the handle. There’s a lot going on inside the door, so there are a few things that commonly go wrong:
- The handle has gone stiff or floppy and won't lift properly
- The key turns but the door won't lock
- The key won't turn at all, or feels like it's about to snap
- The door only locks when you lift and shove it hard
- The lock has seized completely and you can't get in or out
- The cylinder (the part the key goes into) is loose or sticking
Some of these are simple repairs. Others mean the mechanism or cylinder needs replacing. Geoff will always tell you which it is before doing the work, so there are no surprises.
Repair or replace? Geoff will tell you straight
Not every uPVC lock problem means a full replacement. Often a mechanism can be adjusted, realigned, or a single part swapped out, which saves you money. Sometimes the whole multipoint system has failed and needs replacing.
Geoff’s approach is simple. He’ll diagnose the actual problem, explain what’s needed in plain English, and give you an honest price. If a repair will do the job, he’ll repair it. If a replacement is the sensible option, he’ll tell you why.
As a rough guide, a new cylinder for a uPVC door starts from £85, and a new multipoint locking system starts from £200. The final price depends on the type of lock your door needs, and Geoff will confirm it with you before starting.
A word on lock snapping and your security
If your uPVC door was fitted more than a few years ago, it may have a standard euro cylinder that’s vulnerable to lock snapping. This is a quick and quiet break-in method that targets older cylinders, and it’s become one of the more common ways burglars get into homes with uPVC and composite doors.
The good news is that it’s easily fixed. An anti-snap cylinder or snap safe cylinder, rated to the TS007 1 or 3-star or Sold Secure Diamond standard, is designed to resist snapping and is what most home insurers now look for. If Geoff is replacing your cylinder anyway, it makes sense to upgrade to an anti-snap one at the same time. He’ll talk you through the options without any hard sell.
What to expect when Geoff visits
Geoff will take a proper look at the door and lock before doing anything. uPVC mechanisms can be fiddly, and the cause isn’t always obvious, so he’ll find out what’s actually wrong rather than just guessing.
Once he knows what’s needed, he’ll explain it and confirm the price. He carries a wide range of cylinders and common mechanism parts in the van, so in most cases he can sort the problem on the same visit. Before he leaves, he’ll check the door locks and unlocks smoothly and that you’re happy with how it feels.

Common questions about uPVC door locks
My uPVC door won't lock unless I lift the handle really hard. Is that fixable?
Usually, yes. This is often a sign the door has dropped slightly or the mechanism is wearing. Geoff can frequently adjust or realign it without a full replacement. Best to sort it early, before the mechanism fails completely and locks you out.
Can you replace just the cylinder, or do I need a whole new lock?
In many cases just the cylinder, which is the cheaper fix. If the multipoint mechanism itself has failed, that’s a separate job. Geoff will tell you which you need and won’t replace more than necessary.
Do I need an anti-snap lock?
If your current cylinder is an older standard one, an anti-snap upgrade is well worth it for the security and is often what insurers expect. Geoff can advise based on what’s on your door now.
How much does it cost?
A new uPVC cylinder starts from £85 and a new multipoint system from £200. The exact price depends on your door, and Geoff will confirm it before any work starts. There’s no call-out fee.

Arrived home late on a cold wet winter’s night to find that our front door lock was completely broken. We called Geoff and within minutes, he arrived and moments later we were safely within our home! I left a request on Checkatrade early this morning and within half an hour Geoff had replied by WhatsApp to say he could call at 11.00am to do a free assessment. He arrived punctually and after a quick check said he could fix the door immediately at an agreed price. He did so and also adjusted another door that was troublesome for no extra cost. Geoff was polite, friendly and efficient. I would have no hesitation in recommending him as someone who provides an excellent service.

Geoff arrrived on day 1 & helped us figure out our locks following relocation to the area. He replaced those necessary to ensure our security and insurance compliance. Being new to the area it was great to pick up some local recommendations. His courtesy and patience is much appreciated.

Called Geoff of Grn Locksmiths as we had shut our front door with keys in the other side. Nightmare with 2 kids outside. Geoff was amazing. He was with us in less than 15 minutes and got us in to the house and went on to fit a better mechanism. Professional service. So helpful and so quick. Thanks. Highly recommend.

Massive shout out to Geoff. Our door failed on us randomly on a Sunday night and Geoff came out and resolved the issue. Lovely person and huge thanks for sorting us out!

Geoff came to my rescue when the deadlock accidentally came across and I couldn’t get into the house. He managed to get in really quickly and luckily there was no damage to repair which is something I’d been worried about. I can’t rate him highly enough - great communication and a top job!

My wife found Geoff, with the most positive reviews, we had at least three separate calls from other companies, Geoff arrived on time, and inspected carefully the task of replacing all the locks, at our home, he took many accurate measurements and suggested excellent and well respected locks. Went beyond good service to excellent. Clear communication and written invoices. Always polite and trustworthy. Highly recommended.

Snapped a key off in the lock, Geoff saved our bacon though by removing the broken end. Great service, really polite and friendly, and talked me through some other basic home security advice.

This is the second time I have used Geoff at Grn, he was brilliant the first time and just as brilliant second time round. Super quick to come out and have a look with no call out fee. My lock was assessed and changed within the hour. Highly recommend.

We called Geoff after our new house had issues with the front door locks (one key could only work one way, while one key didn’t work at all!) He was super responsive coming out in just over an hour, which was so appreciated especially as it was a Saturday. Geoff was so helpful, sorting the issue easily, his prices were great, and Geoff himself was really personable, friendly and helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to use him again if needed and would recommend to anyone!

After having locked myself out I called Geoff after seeing his reviews and pictures on Google. He was able to help and arrived quickly. He was obviously very capable and had the door open in no time. Very happy with the service. Also turned out cheaper than most others we googled.
