A nightlatch is the lock most people call a Yale lock, the one fitted to the inside face of a wooden front door that locks automatically when you pull the door shut. They’re on millions of homes and they’re reliable, but like anything mechanical they wear out, stick, or jam.
Note that other types of ‘Nightlatch’ include deadbolts and rollerbolts -they look very similar but have different mechanisms. GRN can advise what you have and/or what is the best type for your door.

Common nightlatch problems
Here are the things people most often call about:
- The latch sticks and doesn't spring back properly
- The key turns but the door doesn't open
- The handle inside spins without releasing the latch
- The lock has jammed and you're stuck inside or outside
- The door won't stay shut because the latch isn't catching the keep
- The lock is loose on the door or the screws have worked free
- The key is stiff, or won't go in at all
Some of these are quick repairs or adjustments. Others mean the latch is worn out and needs replacing. Geoff will tell you which before doing the work.
The deadlocking feature that catches people out
This one is worth knowing about, because it causes more callouts than you’d think.
Most nightlatches have a deadlocking feature. If you turn the key a full turn from the outside, it deadlocks the latch so it can’t be opened from the inside handle at all. Plenty of people do this by accident without realising, then can’t work out why the door won’t open from inside.
The complication is that on some doors you can still pull the door shut with enough force while it’s deadlocked. In a house that’s an annoyance. In a flat it’s potentially dangerous, because if there’s a fire you need to be able to get out fast.
If you live in a flat or share a communal entrance door, you should have a non dead-locking nightlatch, meaning you can always open it from the inside as it cannot be deadlocked from the outside with the key.
There are non deadlocking latches that conform to BS8621(British Standard for emergency exit hardware) and the common BS3621 security standard used on many doors.

Repair or replace?
Not every nightlatch problem needs a new lock. A sticking latch is often down to the door dropping slightly, the keep being out of alignment, or the mechanism needing cleaning and lubricating. Those are straightforward fixes.
If the latch is worn out internally, or the lock is old and no longer up to standard, replacing it is the sensible option. Geoff will diagnose the actual problem and tell you honestly which one you’re dealing with. As a rough guide, a new nightlatch fitted starts from £100.
Upgrading to a British Standard nightlatch
nIf your insurer has asked for a British Standard lock, or you simply want better security, it’s worth knowing that not all nightlatches are equal. Older basic ones offer fairly limited protection.
A British Standard nightlatch, kitemarked to BS3621, is a much stronger lock. It resists drilling, picking and bump attacks, has an anti-saw bolt, and deadlocks automatically when the door closes. Most insurers accept these on a wooden front door, but the most secure configuration on a wooden door is combination of a high security nightlatch and a mortice deadlock that are both BS3621 rated.
If you’re replacing your nightlatch anyway, upgrading to a British Standard one usually costs very little extra and makes a real difference. Geoff will explain the options without any hard sell.
What to expect when Geoff visits
Geoff will look at the lock, the door and the keep before doing anything, since nightlatch problems often come down to alignment rather than the lock itself. He’ll explain what’s actually wrong and confirm the price before starting.

Common questions about nightlatches
My nightlatch has jammed and I can't open the door from inside. What's happened?
It’s often the deadlocking feature. If the key was turned a full turn from outside, the latch deadlocks and the inside handle won’t release it. Geoff can sort it and explain how to avoid it happening again.
Is a Yale lock enough on its own?
For a front door, most insurers want a nightlatch alongside a mortice deadlock, or a British Standard nightlatch on its own at the very least. A basic nightlatch by itself is rarely enough. Geoff will tell you what your door needs.
I live in a flat. Does that change anything?
Yes. On a flat or communal entrance door you need to be able to get out without a key in an emergency, so an escape nightlatch made to BS8621 is the right choice. Geoff can check what’s fitted and advise.
Can you just repair it rather than replace it?
Often, yes. If the problem is alignment or a sticking mechanism, a repair or adjustment usually does the job. Geoff will only recommend a replacement if the lock is genuinely worn out or not fit for purpose.

I got locked out of my house this morning after running back inside to grab something and leaving my keys on the side. Geoff was with us within 30 minutes and had us in, in no time. It was a challenging unlock but he managed to do it without having to replace the locks and whilst my two kids were being pests in the background. Would thoroughly recommend Geoff and hopefully will be using him again in the future in a non-emergency capacity! 100% recommended.

Lost keys to daughter’s flat while on cat duty whilst she was away and on a Sunday. Called Geoff who was super helpful, couldn’t come immediately as on another job but messaged us as soon as he was and met us on site. Very efficient super friendly. Highly recommend. Very grateful parents he saved us, cat pleased as well as being fed through cat flap not ideal !!

I left a request on Checkatrade early this morning and within half an hour Geoff had replied by WhatsApp to say he could call at 11.00am to do a free assessment. He arrived punctually and after a quick check said he could fix the door immediately at an agreed price. He did so and also adjusted another door that was troublesome for no extra cost. Geoff was polite, friendly and efficient. I would have no hesitation in recommending him as someone who provides an excellent service.

Called Geoff of Grn Locksmiths as we had shut our front door with keys in the other side. Nightmare with 2 kids outside. Geoff was amazing. My wife found Geoff, with the most positive reviews, we had at least three separate calls from other companies, Geoff arrived on time, and inspected carefully the task of replacing all the locks, at our home, he took many accurate measurements and suggested excellent and well respected locks. Went beyond good service to excellent. Clear communication and written invoices. Always polite and trustworthy. Highly recommended.

We called Geoff after our new house had issues with the front door locks (one key could only work one way, while one key didn’t work at all!) He was super responsive coming out in just over an hour, which was so appreciated especially as it was a Saturday. Geoff was so helpful, sorting the issue easily, his prices were great, and Geoff himself was really personable, friendly and helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to use him again if needed and would recommend to anyone!
