A window that won’t lock properly is easy to put off dealing with, but it leaves your home open in the most literal sense. Most break-ins through windows happen at the ones that were never properly secured in the first place.
The good news is that window locks are usually repairable. You rarely need a whole new window. Geoff at GRN Locksmiths repairs and replaces window locks and handles across West Sussex and into Hampshire, with no call-out fee and a price agreed before any work starts.
Common window lock problems
Most modern uPVC windows use what’s called an espagnolette mechanism. When you turn the handle, it drives a gearbox that pushes a long metal strip up and down the edge of the window, locking it into the frame at several points. There’s a fair bit going on in there, so a few things commonly go wrong:
- The handle spins round without locking anything
- The handle has gone stiff or is hard to turn
- The window closes but won't lock
- The window won't open at all, or is jammed shut
- The handle is loose, cracked or has snapped off
- The key won't turn in the handle, or the key is lost
- The window has dropped and no longer lines up with the frame
Most of these are straightforward to resolve. Geoff will find out what’s actually wrong before doing anything.
It's usually a repair, not a new window
This is worth saying clearly, because people are often told otherwise.
If your window won’t lock, it very rarely means you need a replacement window. Usually it’s the handle, the gearbox inside the mechanism, the window hinges (or ‘stays’) or the keeps on the frame being out of alignment. All of those are repairable or replaceable at a fraction of the cost.
Sometimes the window has simply dropped slightly due to a failed hinge or hinges on its hinges, so the locking points no longer meet the keeps cleanly. That can make the handle stiff or stop it locking entirely. GRN stock most window hinge types and sizes and can often replace on our first visit.

Window locks and your home insurance
Most home insurance policies expect key-locking handles on accessible windows, meaning ground floor windows and any upstairs window that could be reached from a flat roof, extension or drainpipe. If a window can’t be locked, or the handle has no key, you may not be meeting the terms of your policy.
It’s a cheap thing to put right. Fitting key-locking handles is quick and inexpensive, and it makes a real difference to how secure your home actually is, not just on paper.
A word about fire escape windows
One thing worth thinking about. If a window is your escape route from a bedroom, you need to be able to open it quickly in an emergency. A key-locking handle is good for security, but only if the key is somewhere you can find it in the dark.
The usual advice is to keep the key nearby but out of sight from outside, not in the lock and not hidden somewhere you’d have to hunt for. Geoff is happy to talk this through when he’s out, so you get the security you need without creating a problem if you ever need to get out fast.
What to expect when Geoff visits
Geoff will look at how the window behaves both open and closed, since that usually tells him whether the problem is inside the mechanism or down to alignment. He’ll explain what’s wrong and confirm the price before starting.
Window hardware is very size specific, so occasionally a part needs ordering. Geoff carries common handles and mechanisms in the van and will tell you straight away if anything needs to come in. If GRN do not have the correct parts we can usually still secure a window in the locked position for your peace of mind. Before he leaves he’ll check the window opens, closes and locks smoothly.

Common questions about window locks
My window handle just spins round. Is that expensive to fix?
Usually not. A spinning handle normally means the gearbox inside the mechanism has failed or the spindle has worn. It’s a common repair and much cheaper than replacing the window. Repairs start from £60.
Do I need a new window if the lock has broken?
Almost never. The lock, handle and keeps are all replaceable parts. Geoff will only tell you a window needs replacing if it genuinely does, which is rare.
My window is jammed shut and won't open. Can you help?
Yes. This is often a failed mechanism locking in the closed position. Geoff can open it and repair or replace the mechanism.
I've lost the key for my window handles. What now?
Window handle keys are usually a standard type and easily replaced. If not, the handle itself can be swapped. Either way it’s a quick job.
Do my windows need locks for insurance?
Most policies expect key-locking handles on accessible windows. If yours don’t lock or have no key, it’s worth sorting. Geoff can fit key-locking handles quickly and cheaply.

Lost keys to daughter’s flat while on cat duty whilst she was away and on a Sunday. Called Geoff who was super helpful, couldn’t come immediately as on another job but messaged us as soon as he was and met us on site. Very efficient super friendly. Highly recommend. Very grateful parents he saved us, cat pleased as well as being fed through cat flap not ideal !!

I left a request on Checkatrade early this morning and within half an hour Geoff had replied by WhatsApp to say he could call at 11.00am to do a free assessment. He arrived punctually and after a quick check said he could fix the door immediately at an agreed price. He did so and also adjusted another door that was troublesome for no extra cost. Geoff was polite, friendly and efficient. I would have no hesitation in recommending him as someone who provides an excellent service.

Called Geoff of Grn Locksmiths as we had shut our front door with keys in the other side. Nightmare with 2 kids outside. Geoff was amazing. Geoff came to my rescue when the deadlock accidentally came across and I couldn’t get into the house. He managed to get in really quickly and luckily there was no damage to repair which is something I’d been worried about. I can’t rate him highly enough - great communication and a top job!

My wife found Geoff, with the most positive reviews, we had at least three separate calls from other companies, Geoff arrived on time, and inspected carefully the task of replacing all the locks, at our home, he took many accurate measurements and suggested excellent and well respected locks. Went beyond good service to excellent. Clear communication and written invoices. Always polite and trustworthy. Highly recommended.

This is the second time I have used Geoff at Grn, he was brilliant the first time and just as brilliant second time round. Super quick to come out and have a look with no call out fee. My lock was assessed and changed within the hour. Highly recommend.

We called Geoff after our new house had issues with the front door locks (one key could only work one way, while one key didn’t work at all!) He was super responsive coming out in just over an hour, which was so appreciated especially as it was a Saturday. Geoff was so helpful, sorting the issue easily, his prices were great, and Geoff himself was really personable, friendly and helpful. Wouldn’t hesitate to use him again if needed and would recommend to anyone!

After having locked myself out I called Geoff after seeing his reviews and pictures on Google. He was able to help and arrived quickly. He was obviously very capable and had the door open in no time. Very happy with the service. Also turned out cheaper than most others we googled.
