Getting Locked Out
How much will it cost to get back into my home?
GRN charges a fixed price to get you back in using non -destructive methods: £90 weekdays 8am to 6pm; £120 evenings (6pm to 10pm) and weekends (8am to 10pm); £150 overnight (10pm to 8am) and bank holidays. If Geoff cannot get you back in, there is nothing to pay. If the lock needs to be damaged to gain entry and you want to get other quotes before going ahead with a replacement, there is no charge for the call-out.

Will my lock need to be replaced?
In most cases Geoff will be able to pick the lock without causing any damage, so your existing keys will still work. On the occasions when that is not possible, GRN carries a wide range of replacement locks and can leave your property secure before leaving. You are never under any obligation to go ahead with Geoff's recommendations.

Can you open my lock without breaking it?
In the majority of cases, yes. Geoff uses non-destructive entry and bypass techniques to pick the lock, meaning no damage to the door or the lock itself. When non-destructive entry is not possible, he will always explain why and talk you through the options before doing anything.

Should a locksmith use a drill on my lock?
No, not as a first attempt. A reputable locksmith will always try non-destructive methods first, picking, bumping, or bypassing the lock. Drilling should only ever be a last resort, used when all other methods have genuinely failed. If a locksmith arrives and reaches straight for a drill without attempting to pick the lock first, that is a warning sign and a common tactic used by rogue operators to inflate the bill by damaging the lock. Geoff always attempts non-destructive entry first and will explain his reasoning before taking any further action.

Lock Problems and Repairs
Why won’t my key turn in the lock?
This is one of the most common locksmith call-outs. On a UPVC or composite door, the most common cause is a failed locking mechanism or a euro cylinder that has stopped working correctly, the cylinder prevents the key from completing its full turn. On older locks, a worn or stiff barrel is usually the culprit. Sometimes the door itself has dropped slightly in the frame, putting pressure on the lock. In most cases Geoff can diagnose the problem quickly and complete the repair on the same visit. One important tip: never try to force a key that is not turning. You risk snapping the key in the lock, which turns a simple repair into a more involved job.

Why is my UPVC door lock stiff or not working properly?
UPVC multipoint locks contain several moving parts and wear over time, particularly the gearbox mechanism that drives the locking points up and down the door. Common causes include the mechanism needing lubrication, the door dropping or the frame moving slightly with temperature changes, worn or damaged hinges, or a faulty key or cylinder. A stiff lock is worth getting looked at before it fails completely, as a lock that stops working mid-use can leave you locked in or out. Do not try to force the door or the key. Geoff carries common UPVC replacement parts and can usually complete the repair on the same visit.

What is lock snapping and how do I protect against it?
Lock snapping is a burglary technique used against euro cylinder locks, where the barrel is snapped using basic tools in a matter of seconds, leaving the door mechanism exposed. It requires no specialist skill and was responsible for a significant proportion of UK burglaries before anti-snap cylinders became widely available. The fix is straightforward: fit an anti-snap euro cylinder. The gold standards are a TS007 3 Star Kitemark cylinder or an SS312 Diamond Approved cylinder which are tested and approved to the highest level. When a lock is fitted correctly, the cylinder should protrude no more than 3mm from the door handle. A cylinder sticking out further than this is more vulnerable to snapping. If your door has a standard euro cylinder fitted before 2011 it is very likely not anti-snap. Geoff can check and advise on the right replacement.

My lock is stiff or not working properly. Do I need a new one?
Not necessarily. Locks can last decades but do need occasional servicing. If a key is getting harder to turn or a lock is starting to play up, call Geoff before it becomes an emergency. In many cases a service and lubrication costs less than a full replacement and will buy the lock several more years of reliable use.

Changing Locks
Why should I change my locks when I move into a new home?
The only way to know for certain who has keys to your home is to change the locks. Previous owners, tenants, tradespeople, or neighbours may have copies. It is a straightforward job and gives you complete peace of mind from day one.
Need help now? Call Geoff on 07889325487. No call-out fee, no VAT, fixed price agreed before any work starts.
Are there other reasons to change or upgrade my locks?
Yes. You may need to upgrade locks to meet your home insurance requirements, to improve security after a break-in nearby, or simply because the locks are old and wearing out. It is also a good opportunity to check whether your euro cylinders are anti-snap, particularly if they were fitted before 2011. Geoff can advise on the right lock grade for your door and situation.

Choosing a Locksmith
What are the red flags to look for when choosing a locksmith?
Unfortunately there are rogue operators advertising across East/West Sussex and Hampshire. Here is what to watch out for. Very low advertised prices such as £39, £49, or £59 at the top of a Google search are almost always a sign of a bait and switch operation. Claims of being police recommended are false, the police do not endorse commercial businesses. Any claim of third party approval should be verified directly with the organisation named. If the locksmith will not give you a name, that is a warning sign, it often means a call centre is dispatching a subcontractor who will charge well above the quoted price on arrival. A local phone number does not mean a local locksmith, and a Google Maps listing is not a guarantee of a genuine local presence. Always read Google reviews before you call and look for reviews that include specific job details rather than just a star rating.

What is the bait and switch locksmith price scam?
This is when a locksmith advertises a very low call-out price online, typically £39, £49, or £59, to get you to call. Once they arrive, the price increases sharply, citing complications, specialist parts, or additional labour. The final invoice can be ten times or more the advertised price. By that point you are locked out, stressed, and under pressure to agree. To protect yourself, always ask for a fixed price before the locksmith sets off, ask directly whether they will be doing the work themselves or subcontracting, and ask for a firm quote rather than an estimate. Reputable locksmiths like GRN give you a fixed price before starting any work and stick to it.
